Establishing Ethical Frameworks Regarding the Usage of Fully Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Systems

About the Committee

United Nations High Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence (UNHLAB-AI) is an expert group established in October 2023 by the UN Secretary General in order to ensure the development of artificial intelligence technologies are conducted within established or to be established ethical frameworks and for the benefit of humanity.Fully Autonomous AI systems are systems thar are able to make decisions without a human intervention. Such systems offer massive advantages due to their rapid decision making ability, 24/7 operation ability and real time data analysis more efficient than a human. Fully autonomous AI systems have a variety of applications ranging from software to healthcare, from military to the law yet it has not been utilized commonly due to technological incapabilities and lack of ethical guidelines. With human intervention out of the equation, serious questions rise about accountability, algorithmic bias and to what extent we can dehumanize our lives for efficiency? In this committee, delegates will discuss what ethical questions the fully autonomous AI systems raise, to what extent should they be used, and what ethical guidelines can be established to ensure AI development remains on par with human benefit and ethics. Should AI be given the full ability to decide by itself or should there be serious limitations sacrificing efficiency for more human control?
