The Question of Evaluating Foreign Intervention and Post-Colonial Influence in the 2023–2024 Nigerien Crisis
About the Committee
The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL) is one of the six main committees of the United Nations General Assembly, addressing issues related to political stability, decolonization, peacekeeping, and the effects of foreign intervention in sovereign states. SPECPOL plays a critical role in examining complex international challenges that often fall outside the scope of other committees, particularly those involving historical legacies and emerging geopolitical tensions. In recent years, the 2023–2024 Nigerien Crisis has brought renewed attention to the fragile balance between state sovereignty and foreign involvement. Following the military coup in Niger, the country became the center of a broader geopolitical struggle involving regional organizations, former colonial powers, and new global actors. The situation has raised pressing questions about the legitimacy of foreign intervention, the impact of sanctions, and the long-standing influence of colonial history in shaping modern political dynamics in West Africa.Within this committee, delegates will evaluate the role of foreign powers and regional organizations in the Nigerien crisis while critically assessing the lasting effects of post-colonial structures on governance and stability. Discussions will focus on balancing non-intervention principles with international responsibility, promoting sustainable political solutions, and ensuring respect for sovereignty.
